When protests go ignored, is democracy failing?

It’s funny how the media cover the social movements which are changing the landscape in the middle east, but seem to ignore those that are taking place here in the UK.

Its gotten to the point that there really is very little point photographing the demonstrations and protests taking place almost every weekend across the UK.

The UKUNCUT protests are virtually uncovered. EDL protests a sidepar at most. And students seem to have disappeared back into their books.

Which brings us to last weeks protest in Sheffield, which made only a few down page side pieces.

But the promise of 10,000 protesting outside the Lib Dem conference in Sheffield got us out on behalf of the Sunday Times for some protest photography!

Who of course, didn’t publish anything.

So I thought I would!

All pictures were shot by Doug Marke on his 5dmk2 on the 17-40l.

This blog was first published in March, 2011.

Whilst protest photography became a bit of a sport for many photographers in the 00’s, the lack of a market for these has largely killed off the professional coverage.

So now, as seen in the 2024 immigration protests, images are sourced for free from social media, or the police.
